About
Cypress Mill Homestead is a contemporary ranch landscape set within the oak-studded grasslands of the Texas Hill Country. Designed for a local gallerist and collector of art, the landscape balances the precision of the architecture with the informal character of the surrounding property.
Existing live oaks and native grasslands establish the framework for the design. Planting is concentrated around the home in layered masses of native and adapted grasses, perennials, and understory species, gradually transitioning into the existing meadow beyond. Limestone paving, terraces and a wood deck extend the architecture into the landscape while maintaining a simple, restrained, and local material palette.
Throughout the property, contemporary elements are introduced selectively—a custom steel pipe entry gate and fencing, fire features, and sculptural objects—creating moments of contrast against the more natural setting. Outdoor rooms are positioned within the existing tree canopy and organized around shade, views, gathering, and the client's art collection.
The landscape is intended to feel specific to the Hill Country: informal and ecologically grounded, with a more precise contemporary layer woven into it.
